Running To The Top

If you talk to most athletes, at the start of their season, the one thing they dread the most is the amount of running they have to do; however, running is the only thing the Girls Cross Country Team does. The core of the team has been working hard, in fact they started training even before the season began. Returning juniors Andria and Nikki Scaglione, are looking to make it to the State Championships. Andria Scaglione loves the sport because “You can continuously improve after putting the work in and my goals are to make it to states again this season and beat my last year’s personal best.”

Coach Johnson and the girls talk strategy and goals.

Coach Johnson is pushing the girls to their limits and says “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better.”  All of the returning members are eager to beat their times and have an even more successful season than last year. The team’s first meet was against Massapequa, East Meadow and Hicksville in the 2.5 mile race on Monday September 11th.  The girls were looking forward to starting the season on a winning note and they did not disappoint.  The team was victorious, led by Andria Scaglione’s time of 15:56. The video below is Andria alone is first place as she grabs the victory.

During cross country meets it is good to find a pace that works for you, therefore running in a pack helps maintain that pace. Senior, Josena Joseph says “I’ve been running alongside these girls for almost two, maybe three years, so we’ve definitely established the pack mentality that is needed for cross country”. Josena says she’s been training for this season with the other girls all summer long.

Coach Lyson and members of the team stay loose before the competition.

Coach Johnson says that she hopes to be top five in Nassau County and to make it to State Championships. She believes that the team has the mindset and motivation to have a successful season. Senior, Christina Moran says “As a senior I’m really excited for this season because it’s going to be my last last and I’m planning to make it to counties. With a lot of talent on the team I’m sure we can make it happen.”
