According to authorities a Florida man is charged with one count of “written threat to kill” for drawing a violent image of a gunman shooting people outside a burning school. This image appeared on the homework of a child. Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison stated on Monday that the 33 year old, Robert Edwards of Mexico Beach, Florida was arrested Friday. Edwards is being held on $150,000 bond. If he is convicted, he could possibly face as long as 15 years in prison and a fine of $10,000. Staff and authorities determined that it was Edwards who drew the picture and not the student the homework belonged to. The blue and white drawing shows a school building in flames and a person shooting other people. The picture also includes, two other people lying on the ground in what looks like pools of blood. The words “Pew, Pew, Pew” are also written next to the gunman.
Another stick-figure person who appears to be in the flames is running from the school. “Ahh! It burns!” Superintendent of the school Jim Norton, states, “This action was perceived as a potential threat and immediate action was the only recourse”, Edwards was arrested even though the Sheriff’s Office said “there is no reason to believe that Edwards was going to carry out the threat.” Edwards does not appear to have a criminal record. “Our country has been affected one too many times with horrific school tragedies,” Harrison said in the news release. “We take matters like this very seriously.”
In the past, officials haven’t paid much attention to these types of incidents. But, in recent years, gun violence has increased drastically. People have brought much awareness to these issues because they want an end to it. It’s better to be safe than sorry. At this point in our world, we can’t take anything as a joke. So, authorities took matters into their own hands. “These matters will never be taken lightly and they may not be simply considered erring on the side caution.” stated the Superintendent of the school. No further information has been revealed about Edwards.
