Ten Reasons to Love Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

VICTORIA BONACASA

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with President Donald Trump for the first time yesterday to discuss the future of our two nations. Since November, many Americans have been longingly staring across our northern border towards the politically liberal, universal health care providing, maple syrup making promised land (Remember when Canada’s immigration website crashed the night of the US election?) But as we’re trapped in an artificial orange haze for the next four years, here are ten reasons to pack your bags for Justin Trudeau’s Canada.

1. He’s open about his support for feminism

Prime Minister Trudeau, unlike many other progressive world leaders, isn’t afraid to openly label himself as a feminist. He made his cabinet gender balanced – when asked about why this was a priority to him, he simply responded “Because it’s 2015.” Trudeau has made it clear that he won’t back down from his strong pro-feminist stance: “I will keep saying that (I’m a feminist) until there is no more reaction to that when I say it, because that’s where we want to get to.”

2. His bromance with with President Obama

In June of last year, Prime Minister Trudeau came to the US for an official state meeting. Their speeches were filled with friendly jabs towards one another (“There are some things we will probably never agree on: Whose beer is better. Who’s better at hockey”) and the internet obsessed over the parade of pictures taken, most noticeably this one.

3. He supports refugees

Trudeau has made it clear that Canada will welcome Syrian refugees. He oversaw the arrival of over 39,000 Syrian refugees soon after he was elected, and plans on letting thousands of more refugees into Canada in the following years. Shortly after Trump’s executive Muslim Ban was released, Trudeau tweeted: “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada.” In late 2015, Trudeau personally greeted Syrian refugees arriving at the Pearson International Airport in Toronto.

5. He actively promotes clean energy practices and combatting climate change

Unlike our President, Prime Minister Trudeau actually believes in climate change. Since taking office, Trudeau has signed the Paris Agreement (dedicated to phase out fossil fuels, supports clean energy and provide support to LDCs in achieving their climate targets) and has ordered provinces to ‘put a price on carbon emissions.’

6. His dashing good looks

7. He’s an advid LGBTQ ally

Prime Minister Trudeau was the first Canadian prime minister to march in the annual Pride Parade in Toronto, and has supported LGBTQ+ rights in Canada since day one.

8. His hair

This campaign ad went viral after its release in 2015, poking fun at his various hairstyles – though his appearance has changed many times, his liberal platform has remained strong throughout his political career.

9. He supports the indigenous peoples of Canada

As opposed to our president’s  blatant disregard for Native American rights, Prime Minister Trudeau has supported the indigenous peoples of Canada since taking office. He recently signed the Indigenous Languages Act in the hope of “preserving and revitalizing First Nations, Metis and Inuit languages in Canada” and is working to “correct” the wrongdoings committed to Canada’s native peoples.

10. He once said that if a movie were to be made about his life, he would want to be portrayed by the queen mother, Meryl Streep

Me too, Prime Minister Trudeau. Me too.
