These songs were featured on her albums, Fearless, 1989, and Red. Her music commonly depicts her views on previous relationships she has had in her life and obstacles that she has faced. Lyrically, Swift’s new album, Midnights, continues this trend.

On the new album, the song “Mastermind” presents the idea of people painting Swift to be a villain. In the song, she sings, “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid/So I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since/To make them love me and make it seem effortless”. She conveys the idea that she is an outsider who tries to please people. Similarly, in the song “Anti-Hero”, Swift sings, “I’m the problem, it’s me.” This lyric clearly shares the notion that Taylor Swift is introspective and believes that she is the problem in many of her relationships. These lyrics are relatable because many other people feel the same way about themselves. Taylor Swift’s lyrics helps other people feel as if they aren’t alone in whatever situation they may be going through.

The album Midnights is very similar to her hit album, Lover, released in 2019. Many songs on Midnights share similar themes to the songs on Lover. Most of the songs are sweet and innocent, but then there are songs like, Vigilante Sh*t, which show Swift’s darker side and tie back into themes found on her 2017 album, Reputation.

Overall, I really enjoyed this album and I’ve been playing it on repeat ever since it was released. If you like pop songs with a bit of a folk feeling to them, I recommend listening to Midnights by Taylor Swift.

by Aleena Khan Taylor Swift is known for her many hit songs including “You Belong With Me”, “Shake It Off”, “I Knew You Were Trouble”, and “Blank Space”.
