On February 28th, the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran. Their targets were military assets and the home of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This attack, and the resulting death of Ali Khamenei, has lead to the sparking of an all out war across the Middle East, particularly the Gulf States. The results of this war have been a conflicting entanglement of mistrust and a masterclass in the art of \u201che said, she said\u201d. As of late March, Iran\u2019s ambassador to the UN claims that over 1,500 civilians have been killed and millions have been displaced. This comes after the reports of a bomb launched by the U.S. which supposedly killed around 175 people in an elementary school. In the meantime, there has been 13 confirmed casualties of U.S. Service Members.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The primary reason for the war, according to the U.S.\u2019s official position, is Iran\u2019s development of missiles that break the UN resolution 2231. Thus, the war is positioned as an attempt to safely end the production of destructive weapons by a country seen as an enemy of the U.S. This has lead to scrutiny by many people across the country and the world, as they believe the U.S. has no right to attack Iran for those reasons and relate it back to their previous War on Terror which led to the conclusion that Iran was not, in fact, producing nuclear weapons as they had suspected.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Ultimately, the war comes at a tumultuous time in the world as Israel has had its own conflicts recently and American perspectives on those issues have begun to shift out of their favor. The U.S. government has faced its largest protests yet as almost 10 million people protested across the country on this week during the \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests, and the world\u2019s position on the country as a reliable world power has deteriorated from just a decade ago. The U.S. has proclaimed the war to be close to ending for weeks now, and the deadline keeps moving further and further back. Along with this, Gas prices have reached $4 a gallon for the first time since the spike during COVID, and despite his best efforts, president Trump has been unable to stabilize gas prices with imports from other regions instead of the Middle East.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of now, President Trump is putting large efforts into trying to scale down the war while scolding his NATO allies for their lack of interest in supporting his offensive in Iran, going as far as to claim he may leave the organization. There\u2019s no clear answer as to what may happen with this war, and it could very well continue for months or even years like the war on terror. The results of this war could also seriously impact the future of each country involved as prices increase, regimes change, and public opinion changes over time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can only hope for a quick and peaceful end to this conflict; however, given the circumstances of the deep rooted issues that have caused this inevitable conflict, there is likely a lot to be done on behalf of all sides before we can reach the end of this war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
