Album Review: Tate McRae

Last month, on February 21st, the pop star, dancer, and singer Tate McRae released her third studio album called “So Close to What”. Tate’s debut studio album is called “I Used to think I Can Fly” and her sophomore studio album is called “Think Later”. These albums were released in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Her biggest debut song is “Greedy”, and she is also known for her song “You Broke Me First”.

The new album was preceded by her singles “2 Hands”, “Its Ok I’m Ok”, and “Sports Car”. McRae secured 137 million streams with the debut of her new album and it was the biggest streaming week of her career. On the album, Tate McRae produced two songs featuring other artists. She produced a song with her boyfriend, The Kid Laroi, who is a singer as well. The song is called “I Know Love” with lyrics that speak about the new excitement and complexities of falling in love. The song highlights key points in a relationship and boosts their confidence singing together. In addition, Tate Mcrae produced a song with Flo Milli called “Bloodonmyhands”. This pop/hip hop song is about empowerment and also heart break. The song can be about moving on, but it’s also about the emotions people feel after a break up. 

The most popular song from McRae’s new album is currently “Sports Car”. This song explores heartbreak and a sense of moving forwards in the relationship, as the car in the lyrics symbolizes speed and escape. “Revolving Door” is extremely popular as well. This song depicts an on and off again relationship. Someone keeps coming and going and never fully committing. It is a song mimicking the emotions of frustration and exhaustion. McRae is even crying at the end of the music video for “Revolving Door”.

Of course, many fans enjoyed her song with the Kid Laroi and it explains how fast their relationship started and states themes of trust and understanding each other in a relationship. “Greenlight” is also very popular and debuted on TikTok. Lastly, the song “Miss Possessive” serves as the album’s opening track and features Sydney Sweeney. It sets the tone for the whole album with energetic beats and a strong hook. 

Tate Mcrae’s new album is excellent has received a lot of attention and recognition by her fans. McRae even released a bonus track called “Siren Sounds” because the new album was so well received by her fans.
