OHS Electives

by Logan Bowe

With course selections coming soon, we at the Sider Press would like to give you an overview on some of the electives each department offers to give you some ideas about what classes to take next year! No matter if you’re looking for some Social Studies courses or a more Business-oriented class, even if you want an extra Math class or a deep dive into the Performing Arts, there are plenty options for everyone. Here’s an overview of each department to give you a taste of what elective classes are available next year:

The English Department has some great classes to choose from! If you’re into writing you might choose to take the Creative Writing course, a couple of classes which span over two years and teach you the ins and outs of writing Novel Chapters, Poems, Scripts, Short Stories and more. Otherwise, the Journalism class might be more your speed with monthly articles posted right here on the Sider Press for each student. If writing isn’t your cup of tea, the Film Study course offers you the chance to watch and analyze movies such as “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917”.

The Social Studies Department provides a wide variety of socially conscious classes to take. College Psychology explores the biology and social causes for different concepts and phenomena in psychology while College Sociology goes into the depths of how society functions and how our surroundings affect us and others. Both of those classes also offer college credits to go towards your future degree with a far cheaper price than it would cost to take the class typically. If you’re more into the history aspect of social studies, American History: Post World War II may be right up your alley, as you take an in-depth look at the modern trends and growth in our country that US History and Government classes won’t necessarily cover.

The Math Department has had a growing impact on the current job market, and these electives reflect just that. With College Intro to Computer Science you can learn the ropes of what’s needed to pursue a career in our technologically-imbued future. With our Cybersecurity class, you can find out what aspects of the modern technological world can be dangerous and more so prepare yourself for a career that’s rapidly expanding across the globe. And with College Web Development, learning to create and maintain a website can help you endlessly in your future career aspirations or passion projects.

Science studies the countless wonders inside and out of our world, and these Science Department elective courses are no different. In Forensic Science you learn how law enforcement are able to track criminals and identify genetic and indistinguishable evidence to properly categorize and convict people through Science. If ocean life interests you, the Marine Science class teaches you all about the biology and science behind the ecosystems under sea level. Anatomy is another wonderful class for you to take, especially if you’re interested in a career as a medical professional or biologist.

If you want to dabble in The Arts, OHS has some wonderful pathways into them. The Art classes, Including Studio Arts, Drawing and Painting, Cartooning and countless others give students the chance to learn all sorts of art forms including Sketching and Painting. If you’re into performing arts, the Theatre program is a wonderful place to grow your talents as a performer and learn about the different real life applications of performing arts. Finally, our school has two levels of Band, Chorus and Orchestra, giving students unique opportunities to perform in concerts and improve their ability to perform for large audiences.

These classes, along with plenty other electives are all available to you. If you want to see any other electives being offered next year, feel free to visit Oceansideschools.org, go to the high school section, and scroll down to find “Course Catalog” to see what options you have for classes next year!
