Met Gala Review

Met Gala Review

by Ashlee Martinez

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala to benefit The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.  Many celebrities participate in it every year. This year’s theme was American Independence. Although, in reality, this gala is meant to fundraise, the gala is also an opportunity for the media and the public to gawk at and judge all of the celebrities’ outfits. Did the celebrities do a good job of going along with the theme or were their outfits just plain crazy? I feel that the celebrities’ outfits were cool and stylish; although some celebrities just didn’t go along with the American Independence theme. Take, for instance, Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin. They are my favorite couple ever and, although they dressed nice and looked cute, they were both dressed all in black. Now don’t get me wrong, they wore very fancy outfits, but they both looked kind of boring. I just feel they could’ve done better as a power couple. Also, how about Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello – what exactly was their connection to the theme? I was confused. On the other hand, we have people like Billie Eilish, who fully, 100%, understood the theme! Billie wore an Ocsar De La Renta outfit portraying herself in an American Barbie look. She looked absolutely stunning…but enough with my opinion. I walked around to get the inside scoop from my fellow Oceanside High School students. Here are some of their thoughts on the Met Gala:

Erin M. thought Kim Kardashian was the worst dressed because she didn’t understand how Kim’s outfit followed the theme. She said, “It was strange, but it was also something she would wear.” On the other hand, Erin “loved Kendall Jenner’s look.” Erin felt the dress “really suited her and was really pretty.” When I asked Erin if she thought, as a whole, celebrities did a good job following the American Dream/Independence theme, she replied “Yes. kind of, but I think it’s hard to get a good understanding of the theme especially since these rich celebrities don’t really represent America.” What a great response – I fully agree!

Another student, Mackenzie S., thought that Kim K. actually did pull it off. Mackenzie said, “The underlying meaning of Kim’s outfit is her body being symbolic of the American beauty.” Mackenzie also believed Addison Rae dressed the worst since she “looked like she was going to the prom.” Which is true – Addison wasn’t that creative with her outfit at all.

I also asked Grace O. and Lucy W. their opinions of the Met Gala. Grace believes it’s cool that these celebrities all dress up and go to the Met, but she doesn’t understand the point of it. When asked who dressed the best, Grace said, “My favorite was Bilie Eilish – she came and delivered! I think she did really good job of following the theme. She was trying to portray the old Hollywood Barbie look and, to me, that’s so American. I disliked Hailey Bieber with Justin because even though they looked great and were good looking, they just dressed in all black – it was really boring.”

Another student, Lucy W., said, “I don’t understand that Met Gala either. I feel like it’s just for rich people to show off their expensive outfits and show how rich and famous they are. I didn’t like Lil Nas X’s outfit with the gold and armor. He actually did outfit changes on the Red Carpet 3 times. I just believe it was excessive.

Overall, the Met Gala was interesting as always, but the celebrities need to do a better job of sticking to the theme.
